Latino Studies courses introduce students to the nation’s growing and diverse Latinx populations, with a focus on the experiences of Latinx people in the United States. Whether in art and performance; history, politics, and sociology; or literature, music, and culture, our courses illustrate how Latinxs define themselves in the twenty-first century, and in turn, how our changing nation works.
We offer multiple cross-listed courses with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese that are eligible to be included for credit in your Latino Studies minor.

This course examines the social construction of American borderlands as physical, geographic, and symbolic spaces that have undergone dynamic change as a result of cultural, economic, demographic, and political forces. Through critical readings of historical texts and recent scholarship, we will explore themes that transcend the boundaries of empires and nation-states.
This lecture/discussion-based course will use punk aesthetics as a lens to read critiques of race, gender, social class, politics, and migration regarding Latinx populations in the US and specific Latin American contexts. The class challenges the idea of strict national borders between scenes, assessing punk’s hemispheric scope, translated through epistolary and later digital transnational connections.
