Course Description

This lecture/discussion-based course will use punk aesthetics as a lens to read critiques of race, gender, social class, politics, and migration regarding Latinx populations in the US and specific Latin American contexts. The class challenges the idea of strict national borders between scenes, assessing punk’s hemispheric scope, translated through epistolary and later digital transnational connections. Throughout the course we examine scenes in Mexico City, Lima, Medellín, Buenos Aires, and Havana, as well as Latinx youth subcultures in US cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.
